Today for our domestic architecture discussion, I would like to discuss the setup and function of my own house. After an extended period of renovations, we took a fixer-upper and turned it into a functional home. As you come in the front door, a small vestibule greets you, giving the guest a preview of the house. To the right of it is a small playroom that is easily closed off by two doors. As you step into the main living area you go under a free-standing beam with a sign that reads, “this is us.”

The first thing you encounter is a built-in drinks bar that is readily available for guests as they come in. To the left is the living room area. Our house has an open concept layout; therefore, you can see the entire area as you enter from the vestibule. The living room is very bright & airy. It only contains the necessary furniture to sit comfortably, and a fireplace that adds to the tranquility of that space. Behind the living room area is the kitchen that sits in the next corner. In the middle of it sits a white solid island that holds two sitting spaces. This area is perfect for two people having breakfast or enjoying a cup of coffee. Behind the kitchen island is a minimalist style dining room set for six people. This area features a sliding door for the diners to enjoy an outdoor view as they enjoy their meals. On the other corner of the house is a small built–in coffee bar for the delight of coffee lovers. This open concept and soaring ceilings make it feel spacious and airy. It provides excellent functionality as it is visible from all areas, great for busy parents such as me.

Back to the entrance on the left is a small home office, my favorite place in the house. This section is a bit contrasting to the rest of the house. This is a busy area where everything is. In the office there are two floor-to-ceiling bookcases that remind me of Louise Nevelson’s Black Wall sculpture. These bookcases are busy yet contain the necessary materials for a family to function harmoniously. I enjoy having this area where I know I have everything I need. At the same time, it is a quiet space separate from the main living area where one can sit and read in the nook under a bright window or sit at the desk and finish work peacefully.
